I'm flattered... [Dec. 30th, 2009|12:34 pm]

I'll definitely keep in mind the great advice you've given! You also sound like a very cool parent. I'm jealous of your kids!

I've never thought anything other than I'd be a horrendous parent. Especially given my own non-functional parents would statistically mean I'd be a bad parent too; as parenting skills tend to run down the family line.

It's made me think - I wonder how they would have been? People I'd be proud of? People with a sense of justice, humanitarians, fair, intelligent people? Maybe my own mental problems are partly genetic, perhaps my kids would have struggled with depression and never reached their potential. Perhaps my parents parenting would manifest itself through me, damaging their own growth?

Maybe I would have been a good parent, I have no idea, and never will... but it's great to think that my ideas might work though. =/

I feel guilty - maybe I should post back, and tell them it's all made-up bollox because I don't have kids, and have no idea if my ideas would work?

Just before I learned how dangerous spices can be... [Dec. 30th, 2009|12:57 pm]

My run in with Nutmeg back in the 90's... (notice that it's in the "Dumbest thing you've ever done" post... I did learn a very big lesson that day about Over-the-Counter spices...)

You should put that account up at Erowid to warn others. Extremely visceral account by the way...

First, I just want to say that you have a real flair for storytelling. Also, I tried this myself once, but didn't take nearly as much as you; I simply decided that it was disgusting and pointless, and never tried it again. Reading this, I am glad.

(With comments like these, I'm going to start thinking I can actually write! Hah! Preposterous.)

From Cracked: http://www.cracked.com/article_16178_7-common-foods-that-can-actually-get-you-high.html

"For those of you who who want to push your luck with nutmeg, don't worry. The FDA reportedly has no plans to raid your spice rack. Probably because they're assuming nobody is dumb enough to give it a go. Once you've crossed a certain threshold of stupidity where do you stop? You're going to have to start cracking down on spinning around in circles really fast and smelling your own burrito farts."

Little known opperators in C++! [Dec. 30th, 2009|03:41 pm]
Very few people know (even language experts) of its existence which is good, because of its nuanced complexity.
The operator in question is the Goes-To operator " --> "

It's a very complicated operator, so the C++ Standard committee even placed it description in two different parts of Standard. You could read about it in 5.2.6/2 and 5.9 in C++ 03 Standard.

An example:

#include <stdio.h>
int main()
     int x = 10;
     while( x --> 0 ) // x goes to 0
       printf("%d ", x);

Changing audio drivers? [Dec. 30th, 2009|11:31 pm]
Does anyone have any tips for me?

I've got a disgusting MSI audio controller (my other machine had an awesome nVidia controller with gorgeous graphic equaliser, and various nice options for tweaking the sound.)

Can I install the nVidia one even though I don't have nVidia sound chips, and it's not the software that came with my machine?

This is the old one - with a gorgeous group of controls, and even more selectable from the icons in the lower left (I've used most of these for films, games, online chat or music creation at one time or another - they're going to be really missed. =( ):

This is the "Play-Bus" console I've got from MSI. (Mine says MSI in the top left corner, and is missing a lot of those rectangular option blocks at the top - I guess they're general drivers for lots of companies). I feel sick and want to murder the developers as I look at the interface and see what's missing.*

* Not actually true

Daisy chaining audio controls in Windows 7? [Dec. 30th, 2009|11:37 pm]
In my previous post, I didn't mention one thing...

The MSI drivers are ignored by my sound system, no amount of equaliser tweaking is changing the sound. =(

At least the SRS Audio Sandbox is working fine...

So at the moment, my audio chain looks like this:
Chips > SRS Audio Sandbox > Speakers

Ideally I'd like the MSI (in a perfect world, nVidia) equalisers in this chain too!
Chips > MSI equaliser > SRS Audio Sandbox > Speakers.

Does anyone know how to slide it in? (ooer)
