Breaking: Christian dating site holds passwords unencrypted - gets hacked. Facebook next... [Aug. 23rd, 2009|07:31 am]

Not only did it get hacked by Anon from /b/ - but the passwords people have been using to log into it have been the same for all the sites they use - Email, Facebook, Flickr... and so on.

Facebook accounts have been logged into, and posts made that have been offensive, and embarrassing. A lot of people will have a lot of explaining to do!

Here's an example of a hacked Facebook page - click for full size - NSFW.

Someone calls a bank about "unauthorised overdrafts". [Aug. 23rd, 2009|07:38 am]
I asked my bank and they said "it's a service we provide to you to avoid your embarassment when you try to use your card." So I said

"Okay, I don't want that service. I'd like my card declined if there's no money in my account."

Then they replied "Oh, well, um, it's a service we provide to you free of charge!"

So I say "It's a 'service' that I don't want. I would like my card declined please."

"Oh, well we can't do that."

"Why not?"

"It's a free service as a part of your account. It's to help you."

"I don't want your help. I want my card declined. I do not authorize you to overdraft my account."

"Oh, well, um, but..."

This went on until I finally gave up and asked at what point my card WOULD finally get declined, and they refused to tell me that as well. I am changing banks within the next month.

Getting Real About the High Price of Cheap Food [Aug. 23rd, 2009|07:58 am]

I used to be worried about the number of people being given antibiotics for colds and flu - as they don't work on viruses, and taking them so frequently can lead to bacteria that are immune to that antibiotic.

I'm not worried about that any more - it's insignificant.

You know how pigs have a very similar physiology to humans - and viruses and bacteria can jump from them to us?

For years - due to pigs being brought up in close quarters to each other, their feed has antibiotics in it!
Every day pigs are getting fed antibiotics that they don't need.

I am almost certain it's this environment that's creating drug resistant bacteria.

From the article:
"Overuse of antibiotics on farm animals leads, inevitably, to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and the same bugs that infect animals can infect us too. The UCS estimates that about 70% of antimicrobial drugs used in America are given not to people but to animals, which means we're breeding more of those deadly organisms every day. The Institute of Medicine estimated in 1998 that antibiotic resistance cost the public-health system $4 billion to $5 billion a year — a figure that's almost certainly higher now."

Simple fast quote layout: [Aug. 23rd, 2009|08:09 am]
(I've just tweaked the text colour to black - 12:45pm)

Put your quotes in this (the text highlighted in green):

<div style=margin-left:50px;margin-right:50px;background:#f0f0f0;color:black;>Sarah said previously that "Quote goes here!", and in this case it does, so I agree.</div>

And it'll look like this:

Sarah said previously that "Quote goes here!", and in this case it does, so I agree.

Are the French workshy? [Aug. 23rd, 2009|08:55 am]
A good long hard days work is a noble thing.

I live to work, and I work between 45 and 55 hours a week... about 2400 hours a year. That's not really much - some people put in 80 or 90 hours a week which is then a little excessive!
I think my work ethic is good.

People in Lyon and Paris, by contrast, spend the least amount of time at work according to the global comparison: 1,582 and 1,594 hours per year respectively.

Does this mean that to have lots of self indulgent leisure time, the French perhaps panic in work, cramming all they can do into a 30 hour week?
Surely that leads to all kind of problems being rushed, like mistakes, greater stress, more work being brought home with them?

Also, it can't help their personalities, having such a poor work ethic?

10s of 1000's of people in Bamako, protest equal rights law! [Aug. 23rd, 2009|04:12 pm]
"Tens of thousands of people in Mali's capital, Bamako, have been protesting against a new law which gives women equal rights in marriage.

The law, passed earlier this month, also strengthens inheritance rights for women and children born out of wedlock.

The head of a Muslim women's association says only a minority of Malian women - "the intellectuals" as she put it - supports the law."

Wait, what!?
