Bovril binge. [Jun. 1st, 2009|06:15 am]
Sarah
Beef Stock (43%), Yeast Extract (24%), Salt, Colour (E150c), Waxy Maize Starch, Dehydrated Beef (1.3%), Flavour Enhancer (Disodium 5'-ribonucleotides), Lactic Acid, Niacin, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Spice Extracts (contains Celery), Vitamin B12.

Everything tastes of Bovril.
It happened yesterday, I found a jar of Bovril in the cupboard, I'd never seen it before. The reason it showed up was because Jodi had finished going through the cupboard as part of getting rid of all the old stuff.

I rammed a fork in, and mixed a huge glob with some salt and lots of vinegar in a bowl.
Instant yummy dip! I added sandwiches, and pizza to taste.

I wondered later how long we'd had it, and checked the top...BBE 2006.
It's mostly salt, and ingredients that probably kill more than 99.9% of all known germs so I'm not worried.
I was surprised at the vitamin list though - it read like an energy drink! Lots of B vitamins and other fun stuff. 100% in about 1/10th of a jar (under one serving).
I wonder if those vitamins would survive 3 years on a shelf? I don't know, but I know some of the B vitamins must be ok, as me wee turned ahem, more coloured.

VMWare... [Jun. 1st, 2009|08:59 pm]
Sarah
I've got a nice new XP machine on the network.
It's a virtual one running on VMWare on my machine. I quite like the idea of using it to install trial software to see how I like it without messing up my real OS. If the computer brakes, I can revert to a previous "snapshot" of the OS, and hard disk - no harm done.

It was this feature that got me thinking... I could use it to catch malware from the Internet, and practice cleaning up the system, and seeing what software works the best.

I was about to try the experiment, when I noticed that the virtual machine could see all the other computers on our network, not what I want it to see if it got malware!

Is there an option in VMWare that can isolate the virtual machine, and just let it connect to the Internet?
If not, is there something I can rip out of Windows to disable LAN access?
It doesn't matter if it's deleting system files, or hacking out registry keys - I've got the snapshot to go back to. =)
