We can't take photographs of the police anymore! [Jan. 30th, 2009|07:23 pm]
Get a camera that can upload to the Internet instantly...

New laws set to be passed in England and Canada would make it illegal to use bad language or take photographs of police officers, moving us further away from the idea of police as public servants and more towards the notion of cops assuming God-like status.

From the article:
Two police officers tell a man it's against the law to film him, radio base to check, find out it's not and then slink away really fast...

"Wouldn't the correct thing for the officer to have done is said "I've contacted the station and been informed that you are correct it's not an offence, I apologise for bothering you sir". He may have clawed back some respect but the way he just tries to sneak away is unbelieveable. How often do the police use the publics lack of clarity on laws against them, it is a weapon in their arsenal particularly against youths, insinuating that things will be worse if you don't cough etc."

Dr Wafa Sultan [Jan. 30th, 2009|10:46 pm]

Life and career

In 2006 Wafa Sultan was named in Time Magazine in a list of 100 influential people in the world "whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world."

Sultan was born to a Sunni Muslim family in Damascus, Syria. She resides in Los Angeles, California. She emigrated to the United States in 1989, and is now a naturalized citizen. Sultan has become notable since the September 11, 2001 attacks for her participation in Middle East political debates, with Arabic essays that circulated widely and some television appearances on Al Jazeera and CNN.

On February 21, 2006, she took part in Al Jazeera's weekly 45-minute discussion program The Opposite Direction. She spoke from Los Angeles, arguing with host Faisal al-Qassim and with Ibrahim Al-Khouli about Samuel P. Huntington's Clash of Civilizations theory. A six minute composite video of her remarks was subtitled and widely circulated by MEMRI on blogs and through e-mail; The New York Times estimated that it has been seen at least one million times. In this video she criticised Muslims for treating non-Muslims differently, and for not recognizing the accomplishments of Jewish and other members of non-Muslim society while using their wealth and technology.

Sultan is working on a book to be called The Escaped Prisoner: When God Is a Monster.

Wafa Sultan's appearance on Al-Jazeera television opposite a Muslim cleric named Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouly on February 21, 2006:
